Probing problem pathogens
Colored EM of Shigella dysenteriae bacteria, the source of shigatoxin. In this month's issue, several articles shed new light on various pathogens. Motto et al. (page 2752) show that shigatoxin can trigger thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura in mice. Allen and Deepe (page 2875) show that apoptosis modulates protective immunity to the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. Zhang et al. (page 2855) find that lipoteichoic acid, a constituent of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, can inhibit Th1 reactions and thereby worsen some skin diseases. Photo credit: Photo Researchers Inc.
