This chapter deals with the tissue interactions in developing skin, teeth, and related
ectodermal derivatives. Epithelial-mesenchymal interactions that take place between labile
epithelia and mesenchyme are the inductive interactions that occur after primary induction of
the nervous system and the axial skeleton. These interactions are responsible for the
differentiation of the major organ systems of vertebrate embryos.
